Lael Neale - Live at Night Club 101
I’ve been listening to Lael Neale for a couple of years now. Her last record came onto my radar in 2023 via Sub Pop Records, and I was instantly pulled in by songs like “Return to Me Now” and “Must Be Tears.” To me, her style feels elegant and timeless; the sparse lo-fi production, earnest lyricism, and intimate vocal delivery give the music an evocative gravity. There’s a sense of nostalgia to it that can make you feel like you’re hearing something dubbed from an old LP dug out of an attic in Laurel Canyon.
Earlier this year, Neale released her fourth full-length album, Altogether Stranger. While it has a more high-fidelity polish than her earlier work, it never loses that feeling of closeness that draws the listener in. The show at Night Club 101 came just six days after the release of her single “Some Bright Morning,” (which I imagine is a B-side from the new record) but it didn’t make the setlist unfortunately.
As someone who recently moved to New York City and loves the outdoors, Altogether Stranger has been on frequent rotation for me since its release in May. The way it talks about the polarity between city life and the grounding calm of nature, and the desire to tune out the noise and be present, hits especially close to home.
The performance itself mirrored that same duality. It was an intimate duo set, with Neale alternating between guitar and Omnichord and Guy Blakeslee on keys and guitar, playing a mix of slower songs and more uptempo, guitar-forward ones. Neale’s pairing of keys with the Omnichord produces an ethereal soundscape, and when her voice fluttered above it, it put the crowd in a dreamlike trance. The stage plot was simple, the atmosphere reverent, and you could tell the audience was there for the right reasons as you could hear a pin drop in the club. Her gentleness and intimate lyricism carry immense emotional weight, and during favorites like “Blue Vein” and “Every Star Shivers in the Dark,” I was brought to tears.
